Gringley on the Hill

Welcome to Gringley-on-the-Hill village

An aerial view of the village

Gringley-on-the-Hill, an attractive rural village of around 300 houses and 750 inhabitants in the northern part of the County of Nottinghamshire, is situated in a lofty position between Bawtry and Gainsborough, the highest point being the ancient mound of Beacon Hill, a look out and signalling post in centuries gone by. From here, on clear days, there are magnificent and far-reaching views across five counties – particularly to the North over the Carrs, and to the South-East, where Lincoln cathedral is visible.

The High Street

The village dates back to at least 1086, when the Domesday Book survey recorded the existence of church at Gringleia super Montem.

Gringley offers idyllic country walks, cycle rides or even boating on the pretty Chesterfield canal. There are many interesting places to visit in the vicinity including Gainsborough Old Hall – a mediaeval hall dating back to 1460 - Clumber Park, The Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham, and further afield the ancient cities of York and Lincoln.

The 13th century Buttercross

Within the village itself, the Parish Church, open during daylight hours, has a number of interesting features, and the village is proud of its 13th Century Buttercross, marking the location of the former market. The Chesterfield Canal, designed and built by James Brindley, wends its way round the village. The old Gringley Wharf, where coal used to be off-loaded for distribution by cart round the village, has recently been renovated and provides a welcome resting place.

The Chesterfield Canal at Shaw Lock

Gringley-on-the-Hill is a lively village with a good primary school, various activities in the village hall and a regular programme of social events, ranging from Barn Dances to facility and children’s playground are to be found beside the Parish Council owned playing field on Finkell Street.
